I keep seeing Off around, any good? I worry that something like this would have jump scares or would be scary.

Hmmmmm... I wouldnt call Off a horror game, and theres no jumpscares iirc, but it definitely takes a turn and deals with some dark and disturbing content. Id call it haunting rather than scary imo

Its suuuuper good like super super good, but yeah its not a happy-go-lucky game by far

It really hits you with the absurdism right off the bat(HAH. OFF THE BAT.) and definitely makes you go "WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON" immediately and just doesnt let up on this weird abstract sort of world with such a weird set of rules, and youre just hit with constant "This might as well happen!"-isms. This isnt a complaint btw I adore the game for how weird and avant garde it gets, but its absurdity could be a turn off for others

There is dark content though, be warned. Dealing with death, religious themes, morality, and free will, etc etc. Many of the monsters in this game have body horror elements and are very much meant to be disturbing, so while its not scary scary, its very much meant to unnerve and unsettle

Less of a game thatll leave you awake at 3am scared of the monsters, but more... A game thatll leave a philosophical argument in your heart that you just cant help but think about even years down the line

Off was inspired by Earthbound, so if you can handle the most absurdist horror in that game, you would probably be fine here

Toby Fox was very inspired by this game! Dedan's appearance inspired Papyrus, Zacharie inspired Sans, and the signature battle track Pepper Steak was an inspiration for Napstablook's theme! So its really cool seeing things come full circle with him working on the remaster's OST!

Actually speaking of Undertale, I've got a good litmus test! If you can handle the True Lab segment of Undertale and like- pretty much the whole Genocide route of Undertale or the Snowgrave route of Deltarune... If you can handle those, plus a bit of disturbing character design, youre probably fine

But yeah, not scary, but definitely disturbing and haunting. So approach at your own risk! If you can handle that kind of stuff ough i 100% recommend. The more blindly you can go into it, the better.
